Acura ZDX: Type S Version in the Plans

A few weeks ago, Acura unveiled the return of the ZDX nameplate in the form of a 100% electric sport utility vehicle (SUV). Now, the Japanese automaker announces that there will be a performance Type S variant for the model.

The 2024 ZDX will be the first 100% electric model in the Acura family to receive a Type S version.

The Japanese automaker's SUV is based on General Motors' Ultium platform, which is a very positive development as it is one of the most promising platforms in the market. This means that the ZDX will be able to offer several configurations, including rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Its power is expected to range between 340 and 500 horsepower depending on the chosen version. According to the brand, its maximum range could exceed 500 kilometers on a full charge.

As for the Type S version, nothing has been mentioned regarding power and range. The most popular rumors suggest that it will simply benefit from the largest available battery with a dual electric motor configuration. The brand's performance division could then add its personal touch in terms of suspension, braking system, and personalized aesthetic elements to complete the package.

An Anticipated Comeback

The first generation of the Acura ZDX arrived in the market in 2009 and was a futuristic vehicle for its time. Unfortunately, it may have been too futuristic, as total sales of the model barely exceeded 5,000 units over a period of more than 5 years. Acura had to withdraw the ZDX from the market after 2013.

This time, things are different as coupe-like SUVs are popular, and 100% electric models continue to gain popularity. The ZDX was first introduced as a concept called Precision EV last year during the Monterey Car Week. The concept received a particularly warm reception from the public, which may have prompted Acura to develop a production model.

The 2024 Acura ZDX will be assembled in the same factory as the Cadillac Lyriq in Spring Hill, Tennessee. No dealership arrival date has been mentioned at the moment, but one can expect things to move quickly for the Japanese automaker's SUV, which is expected to enter the market as a 2024 model.
